About This Item

New York, NY: Alfred A Knopf, 1941. Ex-Library. Good. Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. New York, NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1941. First edition. 8vo. Deep red cloth with silver lettering and designs embossed on spine and front board, rough-cut pages, 605 pp. The subject of this diary is not its keeper, but Europe, which he watched with increasing fascination and horror plunge madly down the road to Armageddon in the last half of the 1930's. The primary cause of the Continent's upheaval was one Country, Germany, and one man, Adolf Hitler. He saw European democracies falter and crack, their confidence, judgment and will paralyzed, with the exception of Britain, until they could no longer make a stand. Share the author's wartime experiences in this thrilling first-hand account. Ex-library with all the usual library markings, labels and stickers removed; former owner's blind stamp, spine sunned, dog-eared at top and bottom, bindings lightly soiled, some shelf-wear, text block solid, crisp, appears gently read. Good..

Synopsis

Berlin Diary (1934-1941) is a first-hand account of the rise of the Third Reich and its road to war, as witnessed by the American journalist William L. Shirer. Shirer, a radio reporter for CBS, covered Germany for several years until the Nazi press censors made it impossible for him to report objectively to his listeners in the United States; feeling increasingly uncomfortable, he left the country.
