About This Item

Oxford University Press, 1968. First Edition. hardcover. Sproat, John G. : "The Best Men": Liberal Reformers in the Gilded Age. New York : Oxford University Press, 1968. First edition/First impression. Size is octavo (8vo), 8.5"/22cm h. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth, gilt lettering and black ornamentation to spine and front board. Glossy color dustjacket. Plain white endpapers. [I-vi], vii-ix, [x-xii] pp prelim material, 0 [1-2], 3-356 numbered pp. Notes, bibliography, index. Condition notes: a very good first edition, tight and sharp, warmly inscribed by the author on the ffep. Flaws noted: several small closed tears/chips to dj, with several small spots to front where perhaps tape removal has pulled away the glossy coating, revealing the white paper beneath; light soiling to edges; light tanning to pages. Else lovely. We personally inspect every book we offer.

About Furrowed Brow Books

Furrowed Brow Books was established in 2020. The bookstore's owner, Paul Purman, grew up in an old farmhouse full of books. Paul had been providing online booksales since 2008 through several popular online sales venues. In 2021 Paul was accepted as a member of the Independent Online Booksellers' Association (IOBA), and graduated from the annual Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar (CABS-Minnesota).

Furrowed Brow Books' goal is to offer an eclectic selection, while providing specialty offerings in Eastern Orthodoxy and Byzantine civilization, theology, Christian mysticism, science fiction/fantasy (Inklings emphasis), and military history.

We're happy to discuss making an offer on a collection in one of our specialty areas.
