About This Item

Kyoto: Kyoto Shoin, 1991. First edition. Box top corners split, else about fine. Portfolio, 44 loose plates (including title, half-title, copyright / publication notice, and 2 section titles) in 2-piece cardboard tray box with 4 die-cut flaps at opening of foam-lined box bottom. 30 x 30 cm (11.75 x 11.75 inches). Accompanying exhibition catalog leaflet laid in.

Reproductions of the South Korean artist's sculptural projects "Ground Project Tokyo, 1989" and "Underground Project Korea, 1986, collectively known as the "World Underground Project." In a press release for the 2012 exhibit of the artist's work at Kukje Gallery in Seoul the World Underground Project is described as: "a body of work that frames the artist’s intense interest in the life and history contained in the earth’s strata. The project began with the artist burying many layers of paper deep underground, in several places around the world, and then unearthing them a number of years later. The subtle changes in the paper after their internment recorded geological time. In other words, the residue on the paper – generated by the earth’s structural heterogeneity – manifests and materializes the invisible concept of time." Scarce - only 1 copy on OCLC.
