Near Fine. 12mo (7 1/4 in tall); xl 312 pp. Regarded the father of modern wood engraving, Thomas Bewick brought new expressive possibilities to the declining art. Ancient Greek storyteller Aesop (circa 620-560 BCE) is thought to have created Western civilization's first morality tales. Bewick's Select Fables of Aesop and Others. In Three Parts. I. Fables Extracted from Dodsley's. II. Fables with Reflections in Prose and Verse. III. Fables in Verse. To Which are Prefixed The Life of Aesop, and an Essay upon Fable by Oliver Goldsmith. Faithfully Reprinted from the Newcastle Edition Published by T. Saint in 1784. With the Original Wood Engravings by Thomas Bewick, and an Illustrated Preface by Edwin Pearson. Full green morocco with elaborately gilt bordered panels with gilt turn-ins plus spine with gilt decorated compartments and raised bands. All edges gilt. Frontispiece, preface illustrations, vignette per fable and tailpieces are wood engravings from the original blocks by Thomas Bewick. Opens with Preface to 1871 Edition. Index. Marbled endpapers. Protected in clear wrapper. Spine shoulders rubbed, half-title gutter foxed, preliminaries and rear pages with trivial foxing.

Small woodcut illustrations throughout. A collection of fables, including some by Aesop, gathered by R. Dodsley and accompanied by a lengthy historical introduction. Separated into three books, Ancients, Moderns and Newly Invented (original). POOR condition. Heavy scuffing to the leather, with some soiling, fading and staining. Heavy wear to the leather along the edges, spine and hinges, with chipping and loss. Heavy cracking to the spine, with loss of leather to the head and tail. Ursula written on the rear cover. Covers very tenuously attached. Text block very shaky, with many leaves tenuously bound in. All endpapers missing up to the title page. Names and doodles on the inside covers. Some writing on the last page. Very very worn copy.
