Hurst & Co., New York. Hardcover, no edition stated. No year given. 12 pages of Notices indicate an 1880's-1890's date. Bright gilt lettering and decorative devices such as burning lamps and wreathed torches on dark green cloth covers, which show much blindstamped patterns. Very good condition throughout, with text sl darkened. No names, words, stains, etc. Lower forecorner is bumped. This is a truly odd and perhaps misleading book, because although Doyle is introduced as "the author of "The White Company:" and "Study in Scarlet", etc." on the Title page, this is not a Sherlock Holmes story but a tale of the trap of lust and deceit, as one reviewer puts it, of three Victorian families living in close proximity, with no detectives in sight.
