About This Item

London, UK Arthur Barker, 1965. Hardcover First Edition (1965), unstated, but implied: no subsequent printings noted. First Edition (1965), unstated, but implied: no subsequent printings noted. Very Good in Very Good- DJ: The Book shows a former owner's name and addrss rubber-stamped at the upper fore-edge and bottom edge of the text block; a bit of crimping to the heel of the backstrip and light shelving wear along the bottom edge of the green boards; else flawless if no longer 'fresh'; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia in the text. A handsome copy, showing mild wear and a single but rather obtrusive flaw. The DJ shows mild scuffing at the head and heel of the backstrip; several small, closed tears, nicks and snags; the remains of a price sticker at the upper corner of the front panel mild rubbing and resultant soiling to the white backround field of the tear panel; the faintest sun-blanching to the green portion of the background field of the backstrip (the titles thereon remain bold and clearly legible;) a couple of creases near the front corner; the price is intact; mylar-protected. Close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.75 x 5.9 x 1 inches). 236 pages. Bibliography. Index. Language: English. Weight: 16 ounces. Hardback with DJ. Colin Wilson (1931 – 2013) was an English philosophical writer and novelist. He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal, eventually publishing more than a hundred books. Wilson called his philosophy "new existentialism" or "phenomenological existentialism" and maintained his life work was that of a philosopher, and his purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism. He wrote two major works devoted solely to philosophy, specifically existentialism: this book and "Introduction to the New Existentialism." When "Beyond the Outsider" came out in 1965, existentialism and phenomenology seemed to have run their course; they were not the fresh, vital streams they once had been; many believed that Camus, Sartre, and Heidegger had driven existentialism into the ground. Wilson disagreed. In "Beyond the Outsider" he seeks to revitalize that tradition, establishing the groundwork for a new existentialism of the future, a future that would go beyond the particular type of stoical pessimism that he loathed. His optimistic, existentialism was based on the principles of phenomenology he inherited from the earlier proponents of existentialism, a process wherein our innate preconceptions and fallacies are plucked out at the root. Change yourself, he argues, and you change the world.
