Colin Wilson (1931 – 2013) was an English philosophical writer and novelist. He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal, eventually publishing more than a hundred books. Wilson called his philosophy "new existentialism" or "phenomenological existentialism" and maintained his life work was that of a philosopher, and his purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism. He wrote two major works devoted solely to philosophy, specifically existentialism: this book and "Introduction to the New Existentialism." When "Beyond the Outsider" came out in 1965, existentialism and phenomenology seemed to have run their course; they were not the fresh, vital streams they once had been; many believed that Camus, Sartre, and Heidegger had driven existentialism into the ground. Wilson disagreed. In "Beyond the Outsider" he seeks to revitalize that tradition, establishing the groundwork for a new existentialism of the future, a future that would go beyond the particular type of stoical pessimism that he loathed.
