Father Eugene Buechel was a Jesuit missionary who lived and worked with Sicangu and Oglala Lakota (Teton Sioux) communities of the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations (respectively). In 1924, he completed his first Lakota book, a Catholic-oriented history of the Bible; he would later complete more works in the language while further distinguishing himself as a highly respected Lakota scholar, linguist and ethnographer.
