London: IMPRINTED AT LONDON by ROBERT BARKER, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie. Anno. 1603. 0. 4to. 8.5" x 6.5" x 2" [21cm x 16.5cm x 5cm]. A very good full leather binding, (probably 19th century?). Spine with 5 raised bands, professionally repaired. Later endpapers (handmade paper). Engraved title with heart-shaped centre, dated 1606 - very soiled. Two preliminary leaves ending with the Contents page (which includes the books of the Apocrypha), both carefully repaired with loss to outer edges. The first two leaves of Genesis, have also been carefully repaired, but without loss. Clear Roman letter text throughout, in double column, with marginal notations. Job ends on f.190a (verso blank). Followed by half title: "This Second Part Of the Bible..." . Psalmes begins on f.2 and ends with Malachi ends on f. 117 a (verso blank). The Apocrypha ends on f. 187 b . Followed by an engraved title to the New Testament...Robert Barker, Printer to the Queenes most Excellent Maiestie. 1603 (verso blank except for early doodles). "The description of the holy land..." with a half-page map before the beginning of Matthew. "The Order of Time..." is on f. 110 b. , before the beginning of Revelation (... with the Annotations of Franc. Iunius.). Text ends on f.121 a. (verso blank), followed by; "A briefe Table..." which ends on Rrr 4 b., with a colophon: "Imprinted at London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie. Cum privilegio Regie Maiestatis. Anno 1603 ." Definitely a bible with an interesting past! However, the toning is uniform throughout the book which leads me to conclude that the replacement title page occurred at a very early stage in its history. A well preserved early 17th century bible. Referenced by Herbert 274 / Darlow & Moule 209 / STC 2190 .
