London: Christopher Barkar (sic), 1577. Folio (10" x 7"). An illustrated Breeches Bible with the text in Roman font. Professionally rebound in period-style black calf and bound with the complete Book of Common Prayer.
Description: Begins with the complete Book of Common Prayer with title page (1603) in red and black on large paper. General title page (1577) with decorative border to headline and woodcut of the Red Sea. Text in two column Roman font. Complete set of Geneva illustrations and maps. Apocrypha included as issued. Folding plate of Ezekiel's temple at the end of Ezekiel torn with half missing and one closed tear to foot. Printed New Testament title page (1577). Double page map of Paul's journey's defective with half missing. First chapter woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces throughout.
Collation: [par]^6, A-Z^6, Aa-Zz^6, Aaa-Ooo^6, Aaaa-Mmmm^6, Nnnn^4, [unsigned]^2, Aaaaa-Xxxxx^6. Complete.
Binding: Rebound in period-style black paneled calf. Bords in concentric blind-tooled panels with rolls and corner fleurons. Spine with four raised bands and blind-rolls to compartments. The words "Holy Bible" on red gilt-line morocco label and the numbers "1577" to bottom of spine. Endpapers renewed.
Condition: Title page to Book of Common Prayer mounted on a stub; damp stain to top 1/6 to 1/3 of text throughout volume; Genealogy records of John Tilsby (b. 1770) on recto of general title page; manuscript arrow pointers to verses throughout; Ll3 piece torn to fore-edge without text loss; Mm4 piece torn from lower corner with loss of a letter of sidenotes; Aaa2, Ggg5,6 closed tear into text without loss; Mmmm1 repaired closed tear to bottom edge; Xxxxx3-5 (Tables) tear and loss to text. The above faults notwithstanding, a nice copy of a scarce 16th-century Geneva Bible with good margins and a complete Bible text.
