This set comprises the complete 8 volumes of Ferguson's Bibliography, namely (a) the first four chronological volumes covering the period 1784-1850 together with (b) the three alphabetical volumes which extended the coverage to 1900 and (c) the final volume adding Addenda to Vols I to IV. The set therefore comprises: Vol I 1784-1830; II 1831-1838; III 1839-1845; IV 1846-1850; V 1851-1900, A -G; VI 1851-1900, H -P; VII 1851-1900 Q-Z; [VIII] Addenda 1784-1850 volumes I to IV). Vols I to III are the National Library of Australia facsimile edition (1975-6); Volumes IV to VII are the Angus & Robertson original edition (1955 to 1969); the addenda volume is the National Library of Australia edition of 1986. Ferguson's aim was to include and fully describe all books, pamphlets, broadsides, and periodicals, including newspapers, printed in Australia or relating in any way to Australia wherever printed. Maps, charts and prints, unless published in book form, were to be excluded. Ferguson also aimed to list fully the holdings of the Mitchell Library and the Dixson collection, Sydney, the National Library, Canberra, and of his own collection, with reference occasionally to the holdings of other libraries and collections. For the period 1851-1900 the coverage was reduced to omit some classes of material already listed in other bibliographies and references, namely fiction, drama and poetry; statutes; newspapers, journals and reports; legal publications; and reprints of papers in scientific proceedings and journals. A Good clean set in used and price-clipped dustwrappers, some of which have the volume numeral added in ink to the spine. Some endpapers and dustwrapper flaps have small tapemarks where the endpapers were attached to the pastedowns: the tape pieces were only lightly adhesive but have left these small traces.
