About This Item

Toronto Public Library, Toronto, first edition, 1934. Cloth, 8vo,. [14], 828 pp. 4,646 entries. From the introduction: "The books in this Bibliography were chosen from the Reference collection of the Library to form a chronological record of the history of Canada from its discovery four hundred years ago until the Confederation of the provinces in 1867. In the main, these works were written contemporaneously with the events they record, some by the minds and hands which shaped those events, others by interested or disinterested spectators. They are the journals of explorers, traders and missionaries from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Great Lakes to the Arctic Circle; the records of soldiers and administrators, the narratives of curious travellers. In the nineteenth century, as exploration and conquest was succeeded by settlement, a new type of material emerges; publications of mercantile organizations, of political and fraternal societies, religious and educational institutions, provincial, district and municipal governments. The literature of religious and political controversy increases and belles lettres appear. These books have been selected and arranged regardless of place or date of publication to set forth the social, political and economic activities in our country from year to year in the terms of the times. Works merely printed in this country before the union of the Canadas in 1841 and works with some strong Canadian association have also been included, regardless of their subject matter, as they bear the character of Canadian incunabula. The Bibliography includes books, pamphlets and broadsides." For each item a general description of the edition or issue is given, with some entries receiving a full bibliographical description. A large proportion of entries are annotated A little rubbed, contents slightly agetoned, otherwise Good.
