The book is a standard Jonathan Cape printing (green boards with gilt lettering/emblem on spine, blindstamped title on front board), in the Clarke Irwin series dust jacket produced for the Canadian market. The same dust jacket design was used for all twelve books in the series. "While (Joe, Bill and Pete) are enjoying to the full their boat, the 'Death and Glory', now shipshape and much improved after all their work on it, a sequence of mysterious events disturbs the peace. In rapid and regular succession, boats are set adrift on the river in a sinister and stealthy manner. When suspicion is cast upon the Death and Glories themselves, they determine to solve the mystery. One bully openly accuses them of foul play, and several eye them with disapproval. Worst of all, Mr. Tedder, the policeman, is beginning to have doubts about his young friends. Their resourcefulness is put to the test, and the Big Six (including Tom Dugeon, Dorothea and Dick Callum) make a concentrated search for all possible clues.
