About This Item
Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1994. First edition. Hardcover. As New/as new. First printing. As new in dust jacket. Hardcover. xxxviii+ 354 pp. with chronology, index. In 1905, 26 year old Bill Reid, a former Harvard athlete, was wooed back to the campus by an offer of a salary higher than that of any faculty member. He had one mission---beat Yale on the football field. Reid, with the intent of providing a how-to manual for future coaches, kept a day-by-day account of his activities on and off the field. Interestingly, Reid's diary includes details on some of the unethical conduct so common in modern-day football: spying on other teams, pressueing faculty members to give players passing grades, hiding injuries, etc. Coincidentally, 1905 was also a watershed year for college football as President Theodore Roosevelt called a White House conference with the coaches of Yale, Harvard and Princeton to address the brutality and unethical conduct in the game, a session that would lead to the creation of the NCAA.
