About This Item
Sydney, Cammeray: Simon & Schuster, 2014. 1st ed.. Paperback thick octavo, very good condition, colour & black & white & sepia (brown-tinted) photos, top corner front cover little creased, pages lightly toned, minor edgewear. 497 pp. A biography of one of Australia's greatest artists. Explores how ambition and talent took a working class boy a long way in the world from Newcastle to Sydney and overseas, and how the reaction to one painting (Archibald Prize award controversy) almost destroyed him. It is also a celebration of community, and how one man finally discovered where he belonged - in the unlikeliest of places. The author has spent years researching and interviewing Dobell's friends and long-time locals. He discovered that Sir William was accepted as one of their own - in the small town of Wangi Wangi (Lake Macquarie), north of Sydney.
