About This Item
New York: Stokes, 1918. First edition. Hardcover. fine. First edition of THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. Illustrated paper covered boards. 87 pp. with 31 black and white humorous illustrations in black and white. by Richard Dorgan. A tight, bright, generally fine example (and rather unusual thus), with a tiny stain to the upper front tip. Humorous anecdotes of a World War One Navy recruit. The sketches originally appeared in a Naval Reserve magazine then collected here in book form. Thorne Smith (1892-1934) would go on to become one of the foremost American humorists of the first half of the 20th century; he was best known for his "Topper" novels, books that retained their popularity long after his death and were the basis both for the 1937 movie with Cary Grant and Constance Bennett and the mid 1950s TV series starring Leo G. Carroll as Cosmo Topper.
