About This Item
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1942. First Edition. The third novel in the author's 'Black' series, and the last of his books to be published by Simon and Schuster. With plot elements borrowed from earlier pulp fiction stories, Woolrich set his third mystery novel in South America, where a black jaguar on the loose serves as an alibi for a sinister killer. Easily among the scarcest Woolrich mysteries in jacket, particularly in unrestored condition. Basis for the 1943 film noir 'The Leopard Man,' directed by Jacques Tourneur, produced by Val Lewton and starring Dennis O'Keefe, Margo, and Jean Brooks. The Dark Page, Vol.1, pp.288-289; Hubin, p.445. First Printing. Octavo; black cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; red topstain; 377pp. Hint of a lean, with gentle rubbing to spine gilt; topstain is bright and unfaded - Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.00), lightly edge-worn, with a few small chips and tears to extremities, and red spine lettering gently faded to pink; Very Good+.
