About This Item

[1940 BLITZKRIEG ARTILLERY PLAN Weidinger in German typed manuscript 8 pp original] "Gedanken über Feuerleitung stärkerer Artillerie" ["Thoughts on stronger artillery fire control line"] by the WWII German officer Colonel Wilhelm Weidinger (see Notes). The date "Februar 1940" is written in pencil at the upper right-hand corner of the first page indicating the essay was written about three months before the Nazi Blitzkrieg beginning in May 1940. On page 3, Weidinger writes, "[I]t is safe to assume that the struggle in the West [blitzkrieg invasion of Belgium, etc., opening in May 1940] will not take place as it did in Poland [invasion, September 1939]". In a few places are marginal pencil notes by the officer Walter Limberger (see Notes) Weidinger presumably gave his essay to when the met when both working at Wa Pruf 8, a WWII German research and development center for weapons and operations (see Notes)…the essay concerns organization of artillery fire to maximum effectiveness and how to achieve this quickly and efficiently in a battlefield of rapid and fluid operations, namely Blitzkrieg (lighting war), by identifying coordinates for concentrating fire of multiple artillery pieces using maps and optical equipment and communicating these to the artillery units and their officers uniformly, clearly, and simply, the essay is briefly technical in places, presumed to be unique, one-of-a-kind surviving copy seemingly given to Lt. Walter Limberger (later major) when he and Weidinger were acquainted when both worked Wa Pruf 8, the section of the German Army Weapons Agency in early 1940, Weidinger at a stage in his career and Limberger as an officer assigned to Wa Pruf 8 upon graduating from the elite German officer training school Kriegsakademie in the summer 1939; authenticated by seller with lifetime guarantee, acquired at an auction with a group of materials of the WWII career and work of the German officer Walter Limberger (a major at the end of WWII who was awarded an Iron Cross in Silver) ///// NOTES: WILHELM WEIDINGER, 1889 – 1967, German military officer holding a variety of positions and rising to high ranks in the artillery arm of the WWII German Army…commissioned as officer in 1913, retired in 1944 following defeat of Nazi Germany…a 1942 essay on the use of artillery by Maj. Gen. Weidinger appeared in translation in a 1944 issue of "Military Review," "Artillerietische rundschau" "Maj. Gen. Weidinger" "Army aircraft artillery" Sept.1942, translated in Military Review, August 1944, pp. 108-10 "Early in 1942 the army aircraft artillery was organized, distinct from the Luftwaffe guns, with the special mission of protecting the troops to which it is attached from air attack, and, when necessary, to be used against tanks."; WALTER LIMBERGER, a major in the German Army when WWII ended…in March 1945 awarded the German Cross in Silver ("distinguished non-combat war service", wikipedia), during WWII he worked in Wa Pruf 8 of Waffenamt [the German Army Weapons Agency], Wa Pruf 8 was the department for research, testing, and development of optical, survey, meteorological, artillery fire control, and map-printing devices, equipment, and techniques for the German Army during WWII; Limberger and Weidinger were acquainted by their connection to Wa Pruf 8, and especially their mutual interest in artillery fire-control and effectiveness; CONDITION: well-preserved, very good-plus, minimal wear, faintness to typescript of some letters of works, spots of edgewear, all text easily legible.
