[New York]: Coward-McCann, Inc., [1931]. 8vo. 356 pp. Title in red & black. Turquoise-coloured publisher’s cloth, red & yellow lettering & decoration (very slight bumping to 1 corner), w/ d.j. cover art by Glenn Cravath (minor dustsoiling, very minor closed tear at lower front fore-edge, slight crease upper fore-edge back cover), NF/VG copy. First edition of this final title in Tully’s autobiographical cycle, which opened with Beggars of Life. This absorbing account follows the passage of young Jim from a Cincinnati orphanage through his time as hobo on the road, and into the boxing ring, and subsequent struggle to launch his career as author resolving to “write or starve.” See: Howard Prouty, The Dozen and One: A Field Guide to the Books of Jim Tully (2012); McEneaney, Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing and the Birth of Gonzo, p. 125.
