About This Item

Auckland: Richards / Collins, 1980. A stunning collection of 34 full page colour portraits, each with a brief biography of the subject on the facing page. The end-papers feature detailed drawings of each intricate tattoo. First edition in unclipped dust jacket. 96 pages. 335 x 245 mm (13¼ x 9¾ inches). Dust jacket and book are both in a very good condition. The clear removable plastic protective cover had sadly been secured by sticky tape, over time some of the residue has transferred to the endpapers (this is shown in the photographs). The portrait artist Harry Sangl created these works of art after seeing a centenarian Maori woman with a moko (chin and lip tattoo). He undertook a three-and-a-half year journey around the North Island of New Zealand during the 1970's, looking for the last remaining Kuia (Maori women) with such decorations.
