One of a lovely collection of classic children's books issued in the early-mid-20th century by Garden City Publishing Co. in NY, which primarily published reprints of books orig. issued by its parent company, Doubleday. All the books were cloth-bound hardcover books with a colored paper pastedown to the front board, each illustrated by a famous artist of the day, here, Marguerite Kirmse (1885-1954), a celebrated British illustrator best known for her drawings of dogs. First published in 1898, this edition is from c. 1930s, in 306 pages with jacket illustration, endpapers, frontispiece, + 4 full-page, full-color plates throughout text. With brown cloth covered boards & a colorful front pastedown edged & lettered in orange, this hardcover 8vo is in VG+ condition: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white & unmarked save for old gift inscription dated 1940 to half-title page; the "This Is My Book" box inside front cover is clean & ready for your child's name. Very mild corner bumping & slight rubbing to extremities. The price-clipped DJ is just Fair, with heavy rubbing, many small chips & creases, unclosed splits at spine where it intersects both covers; looks lovely protected in new clear mylar cover Free!
