About This Item
New York: National Police Gazette Corp., 1900. Article on the Australian heavyweight & his victory over Gus Ruhlin on August 10, 1900. This weekly issue of the National Police Gazette has the back cover devoted to a photo of Fitzsimmons, and the article within describes the lively battle with Gus Ruhlin at Madison Square Garden on August 10th. The headline on page 7 reads "Fitzsimmons Beat Ruhlin in Six Rounds" with subtitle "After a Bloody and Gruelling (sic) Mill at Madison Square Garden the Australian Beat His Opponent Down and Out". Even though Ruhlin was 25 pounds heavier than Fitzsimmons, the article reports, in Round 6, "As they were at close quarters, he shot his right up to the jaw like a catapult, and Ruhlin fell on his face, completely knocked out". The front cover illustrates "A diving society Venus, shapely beauty of Narragansett Pier who makes her admirers useful". The Volume LXVII - No. 1201. 12 x 16 1/2", lightly chipped at edges, a sml. tear at the right edge slightly into cover illustration.
