From the Stapleford Library. Armorial bookplate of John Gretton, Stapleford. Lord Gretton, a wealthy brewer, purchased Stapleford in 1894. Lord Gretton is said to have wanted to establish his place in society and bought Stapleford for its connection with hunting and Melton Mowbray. Ownership of Stapleford introduced him to the fashionable hunting circles and a new social milieu.
