Harrisburg: Edwin K. Meyers, Printer & Binder, 1886. Hardcover. Good. First edition, first issue with frontispiece portrait of the author. Octavo. 280pp. Red-brown cloth gilt. Possible publisher's remainder binding, with no stamping on front board. Frontispiece re-inserted, with tiny tears on the margin, some stain , mostly on rear board, a good or better copy. The ninth novel by an African-American (Whitman *A Century of Fiction by American Negroes, 1853-1952*), a tale of the separation and eventual reunion of two runaway slaves which was inspired by true stories. Howard, a Pennsylvania entrepreneur and journalist, also founded the influential *Howard's American Magazine*. Uncommon in the first issue.
