About This Item

London: Hulton Press, 1956. First edition. Hardback. Very good/Fair. Hulton Press, London, 1956. First edition. Book condition: very good. A little wear and a very slight lean to spine. Slight tanning to endpapers and some very light spotting to text block edges. Internally very clean. Dust Jacket: Fair. Unclipped. Edge wear and some chipping to corners. Slight loss to extremities of some folds. Alittle discolouration to spine and some light spotting. Generally rubbed and worn. An anthology of delightfully unusual material. From the seventeenth century mystical poet Quarles to Dylan Thomas, the poetic background of the British scene is presented with a rare feeling for exciting vistas and unfamiliar detail. The choice of illustrations range from a fifteenth century wood-carving in a Suffolk pub to an industrial street scene by L. S. Lowry, shows the same lively disregard for conventional taste. They include superb and important works of British art, they have been gathered from a wide variety of sources. A revealing and rewarding book with lots of illustrations - many in colour.
