In September of 1922, the organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Alekhine managed to edge out superstar Rubinstein by half a point in the final, winning his most famous game ever against long time rival Bogoljubov, whereas Rubinstein struggled for over a hundred moves against Thomas only to come up short at the end. The 30 games are fully annotated by Alekhine, with some notes from The Field column added. A distant third and fourth was a tie, Bogoljubow and Thomas with 4 1/2 points. Fifth was the aging Tarrasch with 4 and Yates sixth with 2 1/2.

Condition:

Front inner hinge cracked, corners bumped, spine ends rubbed, some light internal soiling else a very good copy.

Vera Menchik was a Russian-born British-Czechoslovak chess player who became the first women's world chess champion. She also competed in tournaments with some of the world's leading male chess masters, with occasional successes including two wins over future world champion Max Euwe. Of all the memorable Hastings tournaments, this one must rank near the top for suspense and unexpected twists. The list of players was one of the most impressive in Hastings history, with former World Champion Capablanca, future champions Euwe and Botvinnik, championship contender Flohr, and the brilliant young Hungarian, Lilienthal. He wrote with Alan C. White's Christmas Series Schachprobleme Weiss: Dame und ein Läufer (1911), Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze in 1928 and Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze II in 1947. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. A reminder of pre World War I times was the international masters' tournament begun on April 7, 1922 at Pistyan in Czechoslovakia and concluded by the end of the month, for, with few exceptions, all the leading Continental players, nineteen in number, were on hand, and played the eighteen rounds through to completion. As a consequence a new chess king was developed in the person of E R Bogolijubow, one of the younger generation of Russian masters, who first came to public notice during the ill-fated tournament at Mannheim, Germany, which, when half over, was stopped by the World War. Seven years later, she moved to Tblisi, where she trained with Georgian grandmasters. Her shrewd, aggressive play won her great success early in her career. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2.
