Cummington: The Cummington Press, 1944. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. 74, [1] pp. Quarter calf over black silver-flecked boards, spine lettered in blind, with the original unprinted jacket. One of three hundred copies printed, illustrated with wood engravings by Gustav Wolf and a textual note by Alfred Y. Fisher. Jacket scuffed and stained with a couple of chips, book slightly rubbed at the head and tail of the spine but overall near fine. An elaborate edition and an early production of the press, the first Cummington book to be chosen by the American Institute of Graphic Arts for its Fifty Books of the Year.

The dedication references the girl Pili, the author's wife, and Spain, for which he had a long-standing fascination. A fold-out color map of "Palestine" follows p. 1126, and a single page map of "St. Paul's Journeyings Between Rome and Jerusalem" follows p. 1154. Bound in quarter brown Morocco with gilt spine and gilt title on the front cover. All edges of the book block are gilt. The binding is well preserved, but there are areas of rubbing and wear to the extremities. A small area on the spine tail cap is carefully repaired. Publisher's dark brown cloth with gilt-stamped cover title and decoration. No date of publication. Little is known about the publisher Maler Renz, but it was active in the mid-19th century. This title is not in WorldCat. The title page verso contains a poem by German poet Albert Knapp (1798-1864). Very scarce. In Fair Condition: cover is rubbed and slightly soiled; lacking number 9 and 2/3 of number 10; numbers 30 and 32 are detached but present, with chipping along fore-edges; number 34 lacking lower corner, without loss of illustration or caption; numerous closed tears; finger soiling throughout.
