Title-page dated 1760 but Madan's Preface dated Jan. 15, 1761. 34.5 cm x 22.5 cm, pp. irregular pagination, complete with register continuous: [vi], 717, [718] - Index of names. 53 engraved plates including frontispiece and engraved title-page, many containing double illustrations, many of the copper-plates were engraved by Thomas Bowles. From the library of the Canadian literary giant, Robertson Davies, with his heraldic bookplate to the front pastedown. Contemporary half-leather and boards, six raised bands, gilt-stamped maroon leather spine label, original head and tail bands intact. Covers quite worn, scuffed, and rubbed, corners rubbed and rounded. May lack front free endpaper(?), frontispiece detached but present, otherwise interior and plates wonderfully clean and bright. An immediate best-seller when first published in English in 1563. the book was highly influential in England and Scotland and helped shape lasting popular notions of Catholicism there.. Hard Cover. Illustrated with 30 (of 39) full page copper plate engravings graphically depicting the implements and means of heinous torture. This volume rebacked in contemporary calf with original morocco label laid-on. Original period boards well scuffed, scratched and darkened but presents a natural and quite attractive ambiance. Various foxing and mild offset throughout. Although most plates quite crisp and clean. One plate with water stain to margin only. Several pages chipped at margin. Some text pages professionally restored. All in all, a Very crisp, Very Good copy.

Contemporary binding rubbed with edges and corners worn, joints cracked, pages with occasional tidemarks and some yellowing. Unusually, this volume is complete, from frontispiece through to the final list of subscribers. Based on Fox's classic Book of Martyrs, and augmented with later writers. Overall, a scarce volume in FAIR/GOOD condition.
