A smart first edition copy of one of the short story collections of Andrew Lang, this volume including the tales of ancient folklore, complete with illustrations throughout. The first edition.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, thirty-nine monochrome plates, and in-text illustrations.Collated, complete.A collection of nineteen tales compiled by Andrew Lang, each story being a brilliant example of ancient folklore.The tales explore Arthurian legend, with the adventures of the King, his partnership with Merlin, and his romance with Guinevere. 'The Book of Romance' also includes a tale looking at the 'Story of Robin Hood'. Andrew Lang is best known for these collections of fairy tales, and was an avid collector of folk and fairy tales. He was a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic. Illustrated by Henry Justice Ford, a noted English illustrator who is best known for his beautiful illustrations for Lang's works. Gift label tipped in to the recto of the front free endpaper. In the original publisher's cloth binding, with decorative gilt to the front board and spine. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. A few small marks and patches of rubbing, mostly to the rear board. Front hinge is starting but firm. Gift label tipped in to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
