Loosely inserted is a two page signed H/W letter (on the author's personal headed paper) dated May 8th 1927 from Radclyffe Hall to Mr Adcock. Arthur St John Adcock was the UK editor of 'The Bookman' at that time. In this letter Hall thanks Adcock for the copy of 'The bookman' and goes on to say: '.I could wish that the article had not been written prior to his publication of Elmer Gantry, but there it is, and authors will do these things. I expect that all our readers will guess that that book had not appeared . - any how I hope so. If anyone should say anything to you I trust that you will explain, yours sincerely, Radclyffe Hall'. Radclyffe Hall is referring to her comments in her article :' But today you have sent us a Sinclair Lewis, whom England has welcomed a really great writer, and to me , at all events, his work has a value not solely dependent on its literary merit. For Sinclair Lewis writes AMERICA, and may he long be contented to do so. I shrewdly suspect that he is forming a school - a new school of writing that will help us in England to get closer you your hearts through a more perfect understanding.' Sinclair Lewis was the author of 'Elmer Gantry' which was published in March 1927. An interesting insight from the author who was to go on to publish her own ground breaking novel 'The Well Of Loneliness' the following year. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
