About This Item
1844. Good condition/None. Stampless letter from Weymouth, Massachusetts to Wells, Maine, June 1844, Anna E. Harper, Weymouth, Massachusetts, 1844. 9.75 x 7.75 inches. 3pp.
Nice circular date stamp for Weymouth, Mass, Jun. 29, and 18 ¾ cent rate. Addressed to "Mrs. Mary B. Colburn, Wells, ME, care of Rev. Jonas Colburn." Headline reads "Weymouth, June 26th 1844". Folded letter written in a legible hand. Small holes at mailing folds, 1 inch tear from wax with loss of content, and moderate toning. Good condition.
The first page and beginning of the second are about the family, their lack of communication, and ill health. Anna writes about health as many women did during that time: "I am troubled with weakness of a private nature from which I believe you have suffered, & know what I mean. But I have many more blessings than I deserve." She also writes about moving to Weymouth from Boston and how much they paid for their house. On the third page gossip concerning adultery is implied: "O how melancholy! That Mr. (or Mrs.?) Fairchild should have been overcome by temptation & have concealed it so long. O why don't the clergy preach more about the abominable sin?" She then mentions the Boston fire of June 25, 1844: "There has been a raging fire in Boston yesterday afternoon. Nearly the whole of Dover St. at the south end was burnt. A great scarcity of water was undoubtedly the reason of its great extent." An interesting letter with a nice date stamp and manuscript rate.
