Description:
U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, 1894. Hardcover. Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. This book details a wealth of information on the geology of several regions of the United States, most notably Washington, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. It is filled with maps and other illustrations. The text is a strange mix, with the majority in English, but a substantial amount in French as well. I can't find a pattern in this, and it is not simply a bilingual printing. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. 529 pp. A few marks on the endpapers, but the core text pages are tight and clean. Front board is literally hanging on by a thread, and should be considered detached. The spine covering is broken in several places and is also in imminent danger of being lost. However, the binding remains tight, and al pages are in very good condition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 5-6 pounds. Category: Natural History & Resources; Non-English Language::French;…

New York: Chanticleer Press, for the Garden Club of orange & Dutchess Counties, 1963. Illustrated with three portrait plates, many simple line drawings, quarto, pp 205, very clean internally, hessian cloth in very good condition, the dustwrapper is slightly worn, and a little frayed along the top edge. VERY SCARCE. LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES. [Jane Colden was an American botanist, described as the "first botanist of her sex in her country" by Asa Gray in 1843. Although not acknowledged in contemporary botanical publications, she wrote a number of letters resulting in botanist John Ellis writing to Carl Linnaeus of her work applying the Linnaean system of plant identification to American flora, for which Peter Collinson stated "she deserves to be celebrated". Colden was respected by many prominent botanists including John Bartram, Peter Collinson, Alexander Garden, and Carl Linnaeus. She is most famous for this manuscript, housed in the British Museum, in which she describes the flora of the Hudson Valley in the Newburgh region of New York state, including ink drawings of 340 different species.]. Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion. 206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist. This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of the year there is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to escape the bitter temperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow…
