Plate no. 1,148 - plate no. 1,418 inclusively, i.e. 271 hand-coloured engraved plates (several folding), drawn by Sydenham Edwards. Each volume with title page and index. Attractive Contemporary half calf, red and black morocco spine labels, marbled-paper boards, slightly rubbed, light wear to head/tail of a few joints but all volumes remain strongly bound. Contents clean and tight, plates generally very clean and bright, occasional light offsetting and browning, foremargin of one plate stained, a little oxidisation of the red pigment to the odd plate. Original end-papers, no inscriptions. An excellent early run of this most famous of all botanical periodicals. [Nissen BBI 2350]. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Sydenham Edwards. 8vo (15 x 24cm).

Each issue of The Botanical Magazine was sold separately. Beginning in 1787, it became the longest running botanical magazine published. Each issue contains a full description in formal yet accessible language, and is renowned for featuring the work of two centuries of botanical illustrators.Many plants received their first publication on the pages and the description given was enhanced by the finely detailed illustrations. The plates were copper engraved and the hand colouring was performed by up to thirty people.
