About This Item
Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and tooled in gilt on red ground. With dust jacket.
With 8 full-page illustrations by Ben Enwonwu. Neat ink ownership inscription on front pastedown ("W. Taylor, June 1960"). Trivial bump to ends of front joint and one corner, edges faintly foxed with
a few marks, cloth clean and bright. A very good copy indeed in like dustwrapper, spine darkened with a few nicks to head, shallow chip to foot of rear panel, a few marks to front panel, one corner creased, not price-clipped, very bright.
First edition, first impression. Tutuola, the celebrated author of The Palm-Wine Drinkard (1952), was "among the earliest Nigerian fictional writers in English... who re-envisioned classic themes of African, particularly West African, storytelling and published them from the mid-twentieth century onwards in a written English that remains uniquely his" (Nyamnjoh).
