Burgundy cloth, gilt titles on spine, blind-stamped titles and borders on front board. A mystery novel by the author sometimes called the 'American Agatha Christie.' She introduced the 'had I but known' narrative style in her first book, The Circular Staircase, and is also considered the source of 'the butler did it' plot device (The Door, 1930).
