About This Item
Hispali (Sevilla), ex Tipographia Alphonsi Barrera, 1577. 4to. 5 leaves of which 1 is folding. Full calf extensively adorned in gilt on the boards in ventaglio style, coat of arms in their center. Unobtainable First Edition, of which we present what seems to be presently the only copy known. This pedagogic booklet for learning grammar and eloquence was composed by Pedro Guevara (dead in 1611). Originally from Belorado (province of Burgos), this humanist, about whom very little is known, was a pupil of the great Spanish humanist Francisco Sanchez de Brozas and the main discloser of Ramon Llull at the Court of Castile, where he had been appointed tutor of Infants Isabel and Catalina, daughters of King Philipp II to whom the work is dedicated. Composed in an atypical and somewhat confusing way with folding leaves not following the sense of reading, the work is illustrated with two large wood-engraved wheels where the concepts set by the author are schematized, with flavour of Lullian philosophy. Extraordinary ancient binding in ventaglio style (perhaps a remboitage).
