About This Item
Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1904. Hardcover. Illustrations by Maynard Dixon. Small 8vo. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering and black/pale blue pictorial stamping. xii, 280pp. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece, 7 full-page plates. Very good. Mildest of binding edgewear only; tight and internally fine and bright. Handsome ninth printing of the first illustrated 1902 edition of this tale originally published in 1890. One of the first great depictions of the Pacific Northwest landscape, this thinly-veiled autobiography offers a sympathetic account of missionaries and the Native Americans of this region. It is Balch's only novel and he died from tuberculosis at age 29 the year after its publication. A sharp, lovely copy with pristine plates.
