London and New York: G Routledge & Co, 1858 A very good copy of this study of British Columbia, written at the time of the Gold Rush, and with fold-out map that contains some of the sites where gold was found. In the original card binding with picture and titles to spine and front board, and advert for 'Reading for the Sea-Side' to the back board. Internally the endpapers are filled with adverts, including both sides of the free endpapers. Contents with half title (with small neat pencil note about the author); folding map; title; preface; contents listing and text pp 1-240; appendix on 'chinook jargon' pp 241-3; Appendix - Act to provide for the Government of British Columbia pp 244-7; the end. The binding is quite clean with slightly grubby edges. The front board has turned corners; the spine has small loss at the top spine end and a little nibble at the bottom; back board with small dent out of top edge. Internally the map is very clean with a small repair to the attachment. Contents in very good clean condition with toning to the side edge of a couple of pages and occasional light toning at the top page edge.

London, 1858.. viii,247pp. Folding frontispiece map. Half title. 16mo. Original color pictorial boards, backstrip neatly replaced. Tiny closed tear in map near mounting stub. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Includes descriptions of the Gold Rush, which had begun the same year as the publication of this work and radically changed the character of the region, which had until that time been mainly a source of furs for the Hudson's Bay Company. Reprinted in the appendix is the act of Parliament dated Aug. 2, 1858, which called for a separate government for British Columbia. Hazlitt also treats the natives of the region and includes a brief Chinook vocabulary. He "[d]rew on primary sources - letters, and reports from the LONDON TIMES correspondent - for his description of the gold fever" (Streeter). TPL 3818 (lacking map). GAGNON I:1635. LANDE 1219.
