About This Item

London: Raithby, Lawrence & Co., Ltd, 1893. (Original). Hardcover. Contents NF, if ever read. Leather rubbed on corners, hinge, and head/tail of spine. Solid text block but with front cover detaching. Art school ex-lib. copy with usual marks. Leather peeling a bit on faces of corners/front cover. Plates are in pristine condition.. KAVE. The original decorative, color-illus. cover and all contents, bound into 3/4 black leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Pages numbered consecutively throughout, 452 in total. Full of bw, color, and duotone illustrations. Several photochromotypy plates are included; a few are decorated in gilt. The last section is [100] pages of advertisements, each page numbered but not consecutively and very oddly. It could be that all the adverts for each issue were just stacked together and bound into the back of the volume in no particular order. A bit overweight at 5 pounds and may require extra postage. The entire volume for 1893. No individual covers or title pages are bound in. Raithby & Lawrence: Leicester printing firm (later, London: Raithby, Lawrence & Co., Ltd.), noted for its printing of the widely disseminated and influential periodical, The British Printer. Through the efforts and exacting standards of its foreman and chief typographic designer (a new profession for the time) George W. Jones, then Robert Grayson, the firm developed the so-called Leicester Free Style which was England's answer to the artistic printing movement. (Dictionary of 19th-Century Journalism).
