About This Item

Albuquerque, NM: Univ of New Mexico Press, 1975. First Edition, 2nd Printing . Soft cover. Near Fine/None as Issued. Text/BRAND NEW & Bright. Illustrated soft cover/NF, showing faint discoloration; publisher's price sticker to rear. A novel of the coming of age of two foster brothers in contemporary Southwest. Little Sant Bowman, a rancher's son and a white boy, knows he wants to be a champion bronc buster. But his brother, Alastair Benjamin, who is black and a born intellectual, perpetually struggles to be a purely rational being; to think rather than to feel, so to speak. Moving between the Pueblo lands and the Navajo Reservation, the boys rub shoulders with many with diverse leanings including a 101-year old Indian fighter, a missionary converted to Navajo beliefs despite attempts to resist, and old-and-wise as well as young-and-knowing Indians. For this highly charged novel with surprising turn of events, William Eastlake (1917 - 1997) incorporates two previously published short stories: Flight of the Circle Heart (1957, as Chapter 2); Man Trap (1958, as Chapter 5).
