Book club edition. Over 100 years ago workers dug under the East River in huge caissons, suffering from the bends and fighting terrifying fires to build the bridge--its mammoth towers also were dangerous. It opened on May 24, 1883, when president Arthur walked from NY to Brooklyn on it. 125 pp. illustrated.
