[BROOKS ATKINSON 2 LETTERS SIGNED / ROYAL MURDOCH POETRY / LGBTQ INTEREST] BROOKS ATKINSON, TWO TYPED LETTERS SIGNED/TLSs, as N. Y. Times critic on N. Y. Times stationery, 7" x 8-1/2" with horizontal folds as mailed with envelopes addressed to recipient with "Brooks Atkinson" typed above N. Y. Times return address, Atkinson replies to a friend of the gay poet Royal Murdoch who is helping Murdoch get publicity for his poetry, Atkinson declines to write anything saying he is not knowledgeable about poetry, but offers suggestions, (1) September 22, 1964, excerpts, "I enclose a copy of the first column on Alger…I have found over the years I can't write interesting columns on subjects with which I am not [inserted by hand in pen] or in fields in which I have no [inserted by hand in pen above crossed out word "some"]. Judging the value of poetry is something I am not prepared to do with confidence…":, (2) October 2, 1964, excerpts, "very interesting verse, especially the humorous jingle…I know very little about getting verse published…[consult with] Academy of American Poets…possible that Mr. [Royal] Murdoch is a member…", WITH carbon copy of Murdoch's friend's letter to Atkinson dated 9/29/64, "I thank you for your copy of the first Alger article…allow me to send you a book of [Royal Murdoch's poems…might agree with me that Mr. Murdoch is a first class writer meriting more attention…" NOTES: BROOKS ATKINSON, 1894-1984, influential American theater critic who wrote for the N. Y. Times (wikipedia); KENNETH ROYAL MURDOCH, 1898-1991, most of Murdoch's works appeared between 1946 and 1961 as books self-published in Mexico or as limited editions from Gustav Davidson's Fine Editions Press in New York City; considering the mores of the time (1950's), Murdoch kept his sexual orientation unmentioned, hidden, or disguised; but in 1982, the year after Murdoch died, the legendary gay pioneer English-born Winston Leyland edited and published an anthology of Murdoch's writings titled "The Disrobing — Sex and Satire" with his Gay Sunshine Press, San Francisco, the blurb at the Press's website is,"Royal Murdoch (1898-1981) was born in California, lived in New York City for many years and then in Mexico City for the last two decades of his life. He won the Van Rensselaer Poetry Prize in 1933. The Disrobing, an in-memoriam volume, is the first collection of his gay writing, covering a fifty-year period," with the blurbs "[His poetry] has individuality, momentum." – Marianne Moore, and "Royal Murdoch's highly individual style of lyricism marks him for special notice…His originality seems born of a remarkably varied career." – New York Sun…the Manuscript Collection of the Harry Ransom Center at the U. of Texas has a large college of Murdoch's manuscripts, publications, and correspondence.
