A dramatic account of the rise of the large American Western cities, particularly as they developed in the wake of the great wave of railroad interprise during the fifty years following the Civil War. An account of the accomplishments of some of the leaders in the building of the West, the men in the lime-light, the men at the top, and also about the part played by the men at the bottom - the men who sweated and struggled and worked for a pittance. 569 pages with a few illustrations and photographs, bibliography and index. Bound in original marroon cloth with lettering and rule stamped in gilt. Fade to the cloth at the head of the spine. Near fine in very good dust jacket with a few small chips and tears.
