Toronto: Contact Press, 1956. Undetermined. very good. 1st Edition. [8] 9-49pp. Octavo. Beige card covers with red and black illustration and lettering on front cover, with black lettering on spine. Wrappers lightly worn at ends of spine. Light black line on back wrapper and discolouration/fading to spine and edges of wrappers. Small glue marks from where seeped from binding onto first page. Clean tight text block. A very nice copy. very good Signed and inscribed on the first page in ink, an important association copy. A book of poetry by the Romanian-born Canadian poet. Layton was later nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1981, awarded the Governor General's award in 1959, and made an officer of Canada in 1976. He was also the first non-Italian to be awarded the Petrarch Award for Poetry. Inscription reads "22 March 1956 for George Whalley with a cordial handshake, Irving Layton, Montreal, Que". George Whalley was a scholar, poet, naval officer and secret intelligence agent during World War II, CBC broadcaster, musician, biographer, and translator. Also a fellow poet Whalley published two collections of poems written during World War Two. 1956
