Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government.. 1859.. Lithograph, hand colored, image area approximately 9 x 6 3/4 inches on sheet 11 x 8 1/2 inches. Very good, clean condition. An exceptionally fine handcolored lithograph issued in the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys, To Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean" published by the U.S. Government. This is plate XV from volume X, depicting a hawk perched on a branch. The Latin name given is the contemporary name for this bird; no common name is given. The region noted at the top left of this plate is the 32nd. Parallel (East). This specimen was collected in the area of Fort Fillmore (New Mexico, about 36 miles above El Paso, Texas). .
