According to the copyright page, "engaged in a long-running battle, the Yooks and the Zooks develop more and more sophisticated weaponry as they attempt to outdo each other." Other than the gift inscription, a bright, fresh copy of the first printing.

It is an anti-war story; specifically, a parable about arms races in general and mutually assured destruction and nuclear weapons in particular. The Butter Battle Book was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
