About This Item

Harper Woods, MI: The Adagio Press, 1969. Soft cover. Fine. Never bound folded pages gathered into four signatures, measuring 15 by 10 1/2 inches, 54 pages, text printed in sanguine, blue and black from Palatino and Pascal types on Tovil handmade paper. In pristine condition, but lacking the Doves Press leaves. A complete set of never bound pages of this important study of the Doves Press, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, masterfully designed and printed by Leonard Bahr at his Adagio Press. One of a few unbound copies from Bahr's estate, ten copies of which were later bound as retree or leftover copies. Accompanied by the six-page prospectus and order form; copy number 15 of the 19 page booklet "A Letter to Stella" with it's folded notice and printed envelope; the mounted photo of Walker and Cobden-Sanderson; a slip denoting the binding of the ten leftover sets of sheets; and a listing of the book as a work in progress. More significantly, included with this set is a completely different trial title-page, three trial pages with substantially different text, with annotations and a small pencil drawing of a proposed title-page, the proceeding pages on different paper than the finished pages; and a four-page trial sheet on Tovil lacking the colored initial. An excellent copy of this work, one of only two extant in this complete state, compiled from Leonard Bahr's own archive.
