About This Item
New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Co., 1943. First Edition. Pictorial boards. Very good. A fine first edition in a very good dustjacket. Toning to pastedowns. Chipping to foot and crown of dust jacket. Laid in is a small pamphlet from WW II entitled "One came back," about Torpedo Squadron 8, stamped on the back. 194 pp. 5 x 8 inches tall. Duodecimo. The readers of the San Francisco Chronicle may have "met" St George already. Now the rest of the country has a chance to share the experiences of a group of American soldiers in Australia, and of Corporal St George in particular. Nothing hilarious -- though mildly along the lines of Private Hargrove; light reporting on the crossing, on first impressions of the country and the people, on non-streamlined conditions, on the three essentials -- food, beer and girls, on amusements and diversions, and finally on the experience of soldiering. There has been very little first hand experience from Australia, and this should appeal to families of men in the land down under." Kirkus Review 16 September 1943
