Unique Handmade Ivory and Brass Cover on Rare 1901 Siddur (Jewish Prayerbook) Form of Prayers and Blessings of Israel with an English Translation published by the Hebrew Publishing Company, Brooklyn, New York Book opens right to left. 511 pages. 32mo: 4.75 by 3.5 inches in size and 1.75 inches thick. The original binding may have been green cloth which has been covered over. The first layer is a white or cream colored celluloid frame on the front and back covers with a brass frame. Teeny brass nails mark the midpoint of the frame closest to the spine on both front and back cover. A detailed brass clasp and peg to hold the volume closed are intact. The hinge and clasp are probably prefabricated pieces. The front cover was truly a labor of love with many layers of artistry. Working from the outside in: a brass frame then a celluloid border about a quarter of an inch all around. Then there is a very detailed frame of silver colored metal… Read More

Broadside advertising the twelfth performance of the opera, KAIS, OR, LOVE IN THE DESERTS, at Drury Lane, starring and produced by the renowned English tenor, John Braham. John Braham (ca. 1774-1856) rose from poverty and orphanhood in London to the heights of European opera, where he celebrated as one of the great voices of his age. As a British Jew, he also represented a major shift in Jewish status and social potential in the late Georgian era, becoming not only an artist of acclaim but also eventually the father-in-law of several English aristocrats. KAIS was based on the ancient Arabian love story of Layla and Majnun, which had been adapted into a famous work by Persian Poet Nizami Ganjavi in the 12th century, which in turn became the source for numerous later poets and mystics throughout the Middle East and… Read More

Octavo, paper boards, 22 x 15 cm, [viii], 132 pages; backstrip chipped, paper toned and a little brittle, with torn title page and occasional chipping, decent condition overall. Half-tone photos throughout.A very evocative guide book to "Jewish excursions" in Frankfurt and Hessen, dedicated to "My wife, Bertha Lilienthal, née Fuchs. My hiking companion on rocky roads." The preface is dated almost exactly a year before Kristallnacht. The author was the chief cantor at the main synagogue in Wiesbaden. He and his wife fled to Amsterdam in June 1939. He was transported to Theresienstadt in 1943 and murdered in October 1944. His wife's exact fate is unknown.
