Colorful poster from the 20th Cabrillo Music Festival in Santa Cruz August 19th-29th, 1982. The festival was founded in 1963 by Lou Harrison to showcase the work of contemporary American composers and is still a major event in the world of new music some 60 years later.
This poster was signed by 9 participants in the festival including soprano, Jena Ruchek; American-Mexican composer, Conlon Nancarrow who is remembered for his Studies for Player Piano; guest conductor that year, Uri mayer; composer and theorist, John Cage; composer and conductor of the Santa Cruz symphony, George Barati; conductor of the festival, Dennis Russell Davies; bass-baritone, Wolfgang Schöne; composer and founder of the festival, Lou Harrison; and one other unidentified signee.
The poster, depicting a brightly colored staff and paint-splatter eighth note, was designed by Nanette Maysonave a San Jose State University student who won the grand prize in the design contest that year.
A fantastic contemporary music artifact signed by a who's who of the American west coast school.
